What Are Age Spots?
Age spots, also referred to as liver spots or solar lentigines, are small dark areas on the skin caused by clusters of melanin. They vary in size and commonly appear on areas most exposed to the sun, including the face, back of the hands, shoulders, and forearms. Age spots develop as a direct result of prolonged sun exposure. Ultraviolet (UV) radiation stimulates melanin production as a protective response, and when melanin accumulates in high concentrations, visible pigment clusters form.
UV radiation causes cellular-level damage that affects DNA structure and contributes to early skin aging. In addition to increasing the risk of skin cancer, UV exposure is responsible for many visible signs of aging, including wrinkles, sagging skin, and pigmentation changes.
Treatment Options for Age Spots
Elos Triniti skin resurfacing uses fractional non-ablative technology to target lower layers of the skin without damaging the surface. The treatment combines intense pulsed light (IPL) and radiofrequency (RF) energy to penetrate deeper skin layers and generate controlled heat. This heat stimulates the body’s natural collagen production and supports the replacement of older, damaged cells with new cells. As collagen forms and damaged cells are pushed toward the surface, the skin texture becomes more even and pigmentation can be lightened.
Other treatment options include microneedling, chemical peels, microdermabrasion, elos IPL skin rejuvenation, and topical creams or serums containing hydroquinone or hydroquinone alternatives. Multiple sessions may be required depending on individual skin response.
