What Is Botox?
Botox (botulinum toxin) is used in cosmetic applications for the reduction of facial wrinkles, particularly in the upper third of the face. It is commonly used for glabellar lines (“11” lines between the eyes) and other expression-related wrinkles. Botox works by injecting botulinum toxin into the muscles beneath facial wrinkles, causing those muscles to relax. When the muscles relax, the overlying skin appears smoother.
Visible smoothing is typically seen within three to five days after injection, with maximum effect around one week. Results commonly last two to four months, and in some cases up to six months depending on the product and individual response. Muscles can be treated repeatedly to maintain results.
Botox Treatment & Uses
Botox is administered using a fine needle to inject the product into targeted muscles. The procedure is generally quick, and most individuals resume normal activities immediately afterward. Treatments are performed by specially trained nurses and licensed practitioners.
In addition to reducing facial wrinkles, Botox is used for hyperhidrosis (excessive sweating of the underarms, palms, or feet), lazy eye and eye twitching, stiffness and muscle spasms caused by involuntary contractions, and chronic migraines. Alternatives for facial wrinkle treatment may include Perfect Peels, chemical peels, microneedling, Thermage radiofrequency, and Fraxel laser resurfacing.
