What Is Dermaplaning?
Dermaplaning, also known as epi-leveling, is an exfoliating treatment that removes the top layer of dead skin cells using a sterile scalpel instead of acid-based peels. During the treatment, dead skin buildup, peach fuzz, and surface debris are gently scraped away. By removing the outer epidermal layer, the skin becomes smoother and better able to absorb skincare products into deeper layers.
Dermaplaning is often used for rough or dry skin, superficial hyperpigmentation, mild acne scarring, and fine lines and wrinkles. It may also be recommended to prepare the skin before laser treatments, deep chemical peels, superficial peels, or cleansing facials.
Benefits & Considerations
Dermaplaning can minimize the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, reduce the appearance of hyperpigmentation, stimulate circulation, and encourage normal shedding of the stratum corneum. Removing the outer layer of skin improves hydration and increases the skin’s ability to absorb products more effectively. It can also be combined with chemical peels and other facial treatments.
This treatment may be suitable for individuals with fine facial hair, sensitive skin, redness, rosacea, or telangiectasia, including patients who are pregnant or nursing and cannot use peeling agents. Contraindications include allergy to nickel, inflamed acne, or numerous raised lesions on the skin. Treatments typically last 20–30 minutes and may be repeated every 3–4 weeks depending on individual needs.
